Large, thick, white stalks with slight bulbs at base. Shanks up to 8 in. long and 2 in. in diameter. Mild onion flavor is delicious in soups and stews. Ready to harvest about 110 days after sowing. GARDEN HINTS: Draw soil up around plants as they elongate to blanch stems and improve quality. Seeds can be started indoors 6-10 weeks before outdoor planting time. Before transfer to garden, accustom to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered area outside for a week.

Sow seeds directly into the ground 4 weeks before the last frost date in your area. However, since leeks take so long to mature, it is often best to start seedlings indoors. Plant indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date. Best to keep seedling tops cut to 3" tall. Transplant out on or right after the last frost date.Before planting, work in a 2" thick layer of compost into the soil. With clay and heavy soils, it is best to plant in raised beds. Sow seeds 1/2" deep, 1" apart in rows 18" apart. Make sure to thin seedlings to 6" apart with 1-2' between rows.Set transplants 6" apart and 4" deep in trenches that are 8" deep and wide. Rows spaced 18" apart.
