Amaranthus retroflexus is a species of flowering plant in the Amaranthaceae family with several common names, including red-root amaranth, redroot pigweed, red-rooted pigweed, common amaranth, pigweed amaranth, and common tumbleweed.

Blooms dense cymes of red or green flowers followed by seed heads. Prolong flowering by watering freely during dry summer periods.

Erect, spreading, or prostrate annuals or short-lived perennials. Does best with full sun or partial shade. Can reach 3 ft. tall in some species. Can become invasive. In less hardy areas, grow Amaranthus in containers or hanging baskets, or use as summer bedding. Also works as a short-lived houseplant, or raise in a temperate greenhouse.
