Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Description
Native to tropical American rainforests, Anthuria are grown as houseplants in more temperate climates and even used as cut flowers.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Blooming
To induce flowering, the plant is best grown in moderate shade. To promote robust flowering, place Anthurium by a window that does not receive full sunlight. A well-cared for plant will bloom year-round.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Growth
Generally grown in pot even in tropical climate. Anthurium tends to thrive in high humidity. If the humidity drops below 50% for couple of consecutive days, the leaves will lose their shine and may die. These plants grow best at a temperature between 80 and 90°F/27 and 32°C, but will do fine at room temperature. Temperatures below 65°F/18°C will cause the plants to stop growing. Temperatures below 50°F/10°C will cause damage to the plants.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Planting
Typically grown via a tissue culture in greenhouses, but pre-rooted, potted anthurium can be purchased at nurseries and other stores.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Pest
Slugs, snails, mites, worms, thrips and whiteflies can all be problematic. Weeding will help reduce infestation loads. Diseases and bacterium like rhizoctonia, phytophthora, pythium, collectotrichum, xanthomonas and pseudomonas can all be problems as well. Young plants are the most susceptible to infection; maintaining good sanitation of the surrounding areas is a preventative measure.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Interesting facts
Anthuria are now common throughout the world, with the most popularity in Florida and the Netherlands. The "flowers" are actually colorful bracts called a spathe. The central spadix is an inflorescence of flowers.
Anthurium (Anthurium x ferrierense) - Soil and irrigation
Irrigation is critical in anthurium propagation. Ideally, the soil should be well-draining and evenly moist throughout, though it is better to under-water than over-water. Under-watering can stunt growth and cause root and leaf-tip damage, but over-watering can result in sudden yellowing of the leaves and root damage.
