Araucaria Heterophylla (Araucaria excelsa) - Description
Araucaria heterophylla (synonym A. excelsa) is a distinctive conifer, a member of the ancient and now disjointly distributed family Araucariaceae. As its vernacular name Norfolk Island Pine implies, the tree is endemic to Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. The genus Araucaria occurs across the South Pacific, especially concentrated in New Caledonia (about 700 km due north of Norfolk Island) where 13 closely related and similar-appearing species are found.
Araucaria Heterophylla (Araucaria excelsa) - Growth
Does best in full sun. Height varies depending on variety. Some species will reach a height of 100 ft.
Araucaria Heterophylla (Araucaria excelsa) - Planting
Plant seeds as soon as they are ripe. Stem cuttings can be rooted, but only use the vertical stems. Horizontal stems will never produce a proper tree. Make cuttings in midsummer and provide some heat.
Araucaria Heterophylla (Araucaria excelsa) - Interesting facts
These evergreens can be successfully grown in versatile climates and soil types. Small varieties can be grown in containers and indoors; alternately, they may grow to towering heights outdoors, producing cones weighing between 10 and 15 pounds.
Araucaria Heterophylla (Araucaria excelsa) - Soil and irrigation
Tree requires soil with sufficient drainage and regular water.
