Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus) - Description
C. floridus is native from Virginia to Florida. It is stiffly branched and grows to heights of 6 to 10 feet tall and wide or wider. It bears 5 inch long oval leaves that are dark green above, and grayish-green beneath.

Blooms occur at the ends of the current season's growth. Flowers are borne solitary, and resemble small waterlilies. The blooms are fragrant.

Carolina Allspice is a deciduous shrub that has many ancestral traits that indicate that it has changed little from when it first speciated. These plants are known to have lush foliage and flowers valued for their fragrance and form. Interestingly enough, the seeds are toxic and ingesting them can cause convulsions. When crushed, the dark green leaves produce a camphor or clove-like aroma.
