Small Cape Rush (Chondropetalum tectorum) - Description

Small Cape Rush (Chondropetalum tectorum)is a drought tolerant tender perennial. It is an ornamental grass native to South Africa's Cape Province. Plants are hardy down to 20-25 F or zones 8-10. It forms dense clumps 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. It has dark green wiry unbranched stems that form papery chocolate brown bands that wrap around the stems. Plants bloom summer through fall and have brown flowers that turn into long lasting dark brown seed heads. Because plants can tolerate wet to dry soils, have a wide pH range, are very salt tolerant and can be planted in partial to full sun they have many different uses in the landscape or in a container garden.

When transplanting into the landscape make sure the hole is twice the size of the root ball. Make the hole deep enough so the top of the root ball sits flush with the soil line. Do not transplant too deep. Refill the spaces around the root ball with loose top soil and water in well. Small Cape Rush (Chonodropetalum tectorum)also does well as a container plant. Use a big enough container that will support the final size of the plant. Use a well draining potting soil that will not stay too wet. Do not transplant too deep. Make sure the top of the root ball is flush with the soil surface and water in well.

Small Cape Rush (Chondropetalum tectorum) - Soil and irrigation

Plants tolerate a wide variety of soil types and pH levels. They do well in anything from low organic wetlands to dry sandy soil types. Small Cape Rush (Chonodropetalum tectorum) however does not tolerate rich soils and those types should be avoided.During the first season of growth after transplant plants should be watered regularly and not allowed to dry out too much. During this first season the plants roots will spread out into the soil getting well established. After plants are established Small Cape Rush can be allowed to dry out and will be drought tolerant.
