Brilliance Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance') - Description
Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is rapidly becoming one of the most popular garden ferns. Its common name 'Brilliance Autumn Fern' refers to the lustrous orange color of the newly emerging fronds which seem to glow against the backdrop of the shiny, dark green, mature fronds. The sori, which are produced in fall, are bright red. This fern is particularly nice when grown in woodland or Japanese gardens. Best leaf color is achieved in part sun.
Brilliance Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance') - Growth
There are many species in this genus of ferns, 1-4 feet tall. Plants bear scaly rhizomes that either creep to form small clumps or are erect and form crowns. Dryopteris does best in partial shade. Grow Dryopteris among other herbaceous plants and shrubs. Less hardy plants should be raised in a cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 35°F (2°C). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50°F (5-10°C), and at night, keep the temperature at 36°F (2°C).
Brilliance Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance') - Planting
Divide clumps in spring or fall for propagation. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.
Brilliance Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance') - Pest
Problems include leaf gall, rust, and fungal spots.
