Meadowsweet (Filipendula vulgaris) - Description

Dropwort (Filipendula vulgaris), also known as Fern-leaf Dropwort, is a perennial herb of the family Rosaceae closely related to Meadowsweet. It is found in dry pastures across much of Europe and central and northern Asia mostly on lime. Genus name comes from Latin filum (thread) and pendulus (hanging) in reference to the root tubers that hang from the roots in some species plants.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula vulgaris) - Blooming

Deadheading will not promote coninuted blooming, so it is best to leave panicles on the plant.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula vulgaris) - Growth

In hot climates, grow in partial shade, otherwise partial shade to full sun is good.

Filipendula was once considered part of the Spiraea genus, from which aspirin gets its name. So it isn't suprising that some species of Filipendula have been used in herbal medicine and that some contain Salicin, which is an ingredient in aspirin.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula vulgaris) - Soil and irrigation

Grow in average to rich soil that is moist but well drained. Some species may prefer boggy soil. With continued moisture, foliage will remain attractive throught the growing season.
