Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Description
Gazania rigens (syn. G. splendens), sometimes called treasure flower, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, native to southern Africa. It is naturalised elsewhere and is widely cultivated as an ornamental garden plant. It is a spreading, low-growing, half-hardy perennial, growing to 50 cm (20 in) tall and wide, with blue-grey foliage and brilliant yellow, daisy-like composite flowerheads throughout the summer.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Blooming
Deadhead faded flowers to promote continued blooming. Provide moisture in summer for better flowering.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Growth
Since Gazanias has many members that are highly hybridized, they have different growth needs. All of them, however, are low, clumping or spreading plants that generally do well in coastal conditions. Gazanias are perennials that do well in milder climates. In colder climates, they should be protected or carried indoors during the Winter months. Most prefer sunny positions.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Planting
Hybrids are either sterile or do not come true from seed. If growing from seed, start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, and move outdoors after frost. In late summer to early fall take offsets for rooting and overwinter indoors. Or propagate through division. Plant Gazanias 6-9" apart.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Pest
Mealybugs. Other occasional problems include powdery mildew, fungal spots, crown rots, and bacterial leaf spot.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Interesting facts
The name of this genus honors Theodore of Gaza, born in 1398, who translated ancient Greek botanical texts into Latin. Gazania is endemic to tropical Africa.
Treasure Flower (Gazania rigens 'Talent') - Soil and irrigation
Does best in gritty, well-drained, light soil. Tolerant of unamended or enriched soils. Does well with regular and irregular irrigation. They tolerate drought well, but flowering is better with weekly waterings in dry summers.
