Foxtail Myrtle (Myrtus communis) - Description
M. communis is native to the Mediterranean. It is rounded, bulky, and dense, but has fine-textured foliage. It bears glossy bright green 2-inch long leaves that are pointed. It also produces white, sweet-scented 0.75 inch flowers. They are followed by bluish black half-inch berries.
Foxtail Myrtle (Myrtus communis) - Blooming
Late summer solitary flowers are fragrant, white and 3/4 inches across with five petals and a starry brush of stamens followed by elliptic 0.5 inch blue-black berries. The foliage is also aromatic. Myrtus will produce the best flowers and fruits in areas with long, hot summers.

Two species of evergreen shrubs. M. communis (Common myrtle) grows to 10 to 12 feet tall and wide. Pointed oval leaves, glossy and dark green, fragrant when crushed. Myrtus grows best in full sun.

Sow seeds in fall in containers in a cold frame (for protection). Can also propagate from semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
