Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamonea) - Description
O. cinnamomea is a fern with two types of fronds. It bear sterile fronds that are erect, and divide in typical fern fashion. The second type of frond are the fertile ones that are shorter and consist of stalks topped by short, tightly clustered, brown spore-bearing bodies.

Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamonea) - Growth
Vigorous ferns that have featherlike once or twice cut fronds and a thick mat of horsehair like roots. 2-5 feet tall. Grows best in light shade, although will tolerate full sun in a damp site where water is plentiful. Works well near a stream or pond. Osmunda prefers wet sites.

Divide clumps in spring or fall. Can also propagate by sowing spores immediately when they become ripe in summer. Spores can lose viability if planting is delayed.

Osmunda is found everywhere except Australia. As no ferns actually flower, flowering ferns are named after the mass of showy, golden colored sporangia that ripen at the same time on the fertile fronds.
