Shell Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Black Turtle') - Description
Young pods can be eaten like snap beans but it's better to let pods mature for dry shell beans. Tall bushes keep pods clean, off the ground. Use them for black bean soup and other dishes. 100 days from seeding to dry shell stage. GARDEN HINTS: In dry weather, keep soil well-watered, but do not work around or handle plants when wet. Pick young pods for fresh use. Better yet, let them mature, cut plants and dry well, then shell beans for later use.
