Leadwort (Ceratostigma plumbaginoides) - Description

C. plumbaginoides are native to China. It bears bronzy to dark green 3 inch long leaves turn reddish brown with frosts. Blooms well in areas with long growing seasons.

In summer and into late fall, Plumbagos flower with clusters of intensely blue 5-lobed flowers that look like Phlox flowers.

Deciduous and evergreen subshrubs and herbaceous perennials. Does well with full sun exposure and partial shade. Some species can reach heights of 4 ft. while others grow as ground covers. Grow Ceratostigma in a mixed or shrub border. In areas where Ceratostigma is not growing hardy, raise plants in a cool greenhouse with a minimum temperature of 35°F (2°C). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50°F (5-10°C), and at night, keep the temperature at 36°F (2°C).

Although Plumbagos can tolerate inconsistent watering, they thrive with moderate to regular watering. After the flowers fade, apply a thick mulch around the base of the plant. Does best in moderately fertile and light, moist, but well-drained soil.
