Phormium Colensoi (Phormium cookianum) - Description

Phormium colensoi (syn. Phormium cookianum; mountain flax or wharariki in Māori) is a perennial plant that is native to New Zealand. It is less common than the other Phormium species, P. tenax. The greenish, yellow or orange flowers are followed by twisted seed pods.

Blooms a large amount of small, tubular flowers on leafless stems in summer. Phormium is grown for its often colorful, large and long foliage.

Evergreen perennial. Plants do well in full sun or light shade. Mulch less hardy species in winter. Grows best in coastal conditions. Works well in a border or as a specimen plant by lawns or buildings. However, Phormium is usually grown in containers for pleasant summer viewing.
