Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Description
Humulus lupulus (common hop or hop) is a species of flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family, native to Europe, western Asia and North America. It is a dioecious, perennial, herbaceous climbing plant which sends up new shoots in early spring and dies back to a cold-hardy rhizome in autumn. Strictly speaking it is a bine rather than a vine, using its own shoots to act as supports for new growth.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Blooming
Blooms small flowers, male and females on separate plants. The females of H. lupulus ripen into cones (hops), that can be quite fragrant.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Growth
Herbaceous perennials with twining stems. Must grow with climibing support, on a fence, trellis, large shrub, small tree, garage etc. Grows best in sun or partial shade. The flowers are suitable for dried flower ensembles. The cones are often air dried, or dried in a well vented oven. Heat should not exceed 140F.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Planting
Propagate from the seed in spring. Sow directly into the ground. Can also propagate from cuttings using bottom heat in summer. In cold areas, plant rhizomes indoors in pots and transplant outdoors in June when the weather is more favorable. Provide space between plants.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Pest
Susceptible to powdery mildew, downy mildew, wilt, ringspot virus, and anthracnose.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Interesting facts
The real country of origin of Humulus is still unknown. It is found growing in woodlands and hedgerows of Northern temperate areas. There are only 2 known species, H. lupulus and H. japonicus. H. lupulus is most popularly known as hops. Hops are often used in brewing, and also have medicinal value.
Common Hop (Humulus lupulus) - Soil and irrigation
Grows best in soil that is moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, yet well-draining. During the first year of growth, provide plants with frequent, light waterings.
