Chenille Plant (Acalypha hispida) - Description

A. hispida grow to heights of 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide. They have heavy, rich green leaves that grow to 8 inches wide. Their flowers hang in 1 1/2-feet long clusters that resemble tassels of crimson chenille. They have scattered bloom all year, but bloom heaviest in the early summer. They thrive in tropical climates, but can also be grown in greenhouses or indoors with heavy pruning.

Does best in tropical to subtropical climates, but can be successfully grown as an indoor plant or in a greenhouse, but if indoors, mist frequently. Pinching young plants can encourage growth. Requires partial shade or bright, indirect light. Indoor plants do well in medium light, but leaf color develops best on plants kept in bright light.

Chenille Plant (Acalypha hispida) - Planting

In non-native climates, should be grown indoors. A. wilkensia can be grown in outdoor planters, but soil should remain dry during the winter. Propagated by stem cutting throughout the year. Cover with plastic to prevent moisture from escaping until they get established.
