Egyptian Starcluster (Pentas lanceolata) - Description

Pentas lanceolata, commonly known as Egyptian Starcluster, is a species of flowering plant in the madder family, Rubiaceae that is native to much of Africa as well as Yemen. It is known for its wide use as a garden plant where it often accompanies butterfly gardens.

The flowers look like small clusters of stars, hence the common name Star Clusters. They come in various colors including white, lilac, pink and red. It can bloom year round if grown as a perennial; however, most gardeners grow it as an annual in which case it flowers in the Summer.

Evergreen perennials, biennials, and shrubs. In tropical climates, Star Clusters can reach 6 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide. In cooler climates, it will reach 2 to 3 ft. tall and just as wide. Grows best in full sun. In less hardy areas, grow Pentas in a temperate greenhouse. Can grow in containers outdoors during the summer. Grows best in warmer areas, where it works best in a bed or border, or in containers on a patio.
