Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) - Description
Phoenix roebelenii, with common names of pygmy date palm or miniature date palm, is a species of date palm native to southeastern Asia, from southwestern China (Yunnan Province), northern Laos and northern Vietnam, (in Dien Bien Province, Ha Giang Province, Cao Bang Province, Lang Son Province). The name is sometimes mistakenly cited as roebelinii.

To grow from seed, clean the seed down to the seed coat and soak in water for 1-7 days, then sow in well drained soil and water regularly. If you want to be sure your Date Palm is female, propagate from cuttings or buy a guaranteed tree.

Date Palms have separate male and female plants. Although they flower on their own, they can be induced to flower by a physical stress. Farmers that grow Date Palms for fruit will physically whip the trunks of the male and female plants at the same time in order to induce flowering at the same time.
