Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Description

Plumeria rubra is a deciduous plant species belonging to the genus Plumeria. Originally native to Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Venezuela, it has been widely cultivated in subtropical and tropical climates worldwide and is a popular garden and park plant, as well as being used in temples and cemeteries. It grows as a spreading tree to 7–8 m (20–25 ft) high and wide, and is flushed with fragrant flowers of shades of pink, white and yellow over the summer and autumn.

Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Growth

Provide protection from the cold. If average daily temperatures dip below 50°F (10°C), either move the plant indoors or cover the canopy to hold heat close to the plant. An unorthodox method of providing heat for such plants in climates that have possible freezes at night is to drape the branches and leaves with lights, such as Christmas lights. When night comes and temperatures dip, the heat from the lights can create a nano-climate around the plant that will keep it from getting too cold.

Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Planting

Sow seeds at 65°F (18°C) come springtime. Also, the succulent stems are very easy to propagate via rooting the cuttings. Make cuttings of the shoot tips in early spring. Allow the stem cuttings to dry out at the base before inserting into the growing medium.

Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Pest

Prone to spider mites.

Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Interesting facts

If you have ever been to Hawaii, you have more than likely seen the flowers of a Plumeria. These flowers are regularly used for making leis. The flowers themselves have a pleasant scent. Plumerias are classified into the Dogbane family of plants, otherwise known as Apocynaceae. Like most members of this plant family, Plumerias have a milky sap that is toxic. The sap can cause mild stomach discomfort if ingested.

Pagoda Tree (Plumeria rubra) - Soil and irrigation

Does best with well-drained soils. When the plant is actively growing provide moderate water. In winter keep the soil almost dry.
