Lungworts are perennial clumping herbs. They are heterostylous, meaning they have two distinct forms of flowers. The color of the flowers also can change as flowers mature.

Lungworts excel in full shade. They are low-growing plants with leaves that are dappled with gray or silver spots. All species have creeping roots and will spread slowly. Works well as a limited ground cover under a large canopy tree.
