Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Blue Marble Hybrid') - Description
Hybrid Eggplant. We found this stunning newcomer in Italy where eggplant breeding is a fine art. The fruits are round about the size of a grapefruit. And the color is pure white near the stem, heavily draped in deep purple on the lower 3/4 of the fruit. It's a knockout. The flesh inside is pure white, and, of course, very mild and delicious. It's hybrid vigor makes it both very early and much more productive than ordinary eggplants. You won't find a more gorgeous selection of eggplants in any other seed catalogue. Burpee Exclusive. Sun.

Does best with humidity and heat. Day time temperatures above 80°F are preferable. Night time temperatures below 70°F can decrease fruit yield. In cold climates protect young plants with floating row covers to increase the temperature directly around the plant.

Sow seeds in an area protected from the cold up to 2 months before the projected last frost of winter. Plant the seedlings in the ground 2 weeks after the threat of frost has passed. (Leaving your eggplant to grow in a container is not necessarily bad. They generally thrive in the heat that the container provides). The soil temperatures should be above 60°F. Plant in rows that are over 2' apart. Each plant should be given at least 18" of space in between individual plants in a single row.
