Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Fingerling Dark Purple') - Description

Prolific compact 2' tall plants take around 60 days to harvest. Very attractive, nice and glossy, smooth, slender 5" x 1", soft and sweet dark purple fruits. 'Fingerling Dark Purple' is excellent for stir-fry, roasting, and for sliced to bite-sized portions. Gets seedy slower than standard, larger-fruited eggplants. Grows best in full sun and well-drained soil.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Fingerling Dark Purple') - Growth

Does best with humidity and heat. Day time temperatures above 80°F are preferable. Night time temperatures below 70°F can decrease fruit yield. In cold climates protect young plants with floating row covers to increase the temperature directly around the plant.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Fingerling Dark Purple') - Planting

Sow seeds in an area protected from the cold up to 2 months before the projected last frost of winter. Plant the seedlings in the ground 2 weeks after the threat of frost has passed. (Leaving your eggplant to grow in a container is not necessarily bad. They generally thrive in the heat that the container provides). The soil temperatures should be above 60°F. Plant in rows that are over 2' apart. Each plant should be given at least 18" of space in between individual plants in a single row.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Fingerling Dark Purple') - Pest

Prone to wilts. The primary method of decreasing the incidence of disease is to rotate crops. Try not to grow eggplant in the same plot season after season. Pick off any beetles or caterpillars you see on the plant.

Eggplant (Solanum melongena 'Fingerling Dark Purple') - Interesting facts
