White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Description
Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise or Wild Banana are banana-like plants with erect woody stems reaching a height of 6 m (20 ft) and the clumps formed can spread as far as 3. 5 m (12 ft). The 1. 8 m (6 ft) long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems, similar to Ravenala madagascariensis.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Blooming
Flowers are produced throughout the year. Flowers are very unique and somewhat resemble the head of a bird, hence the common name Bird of Paradise.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Growth
Clump-forming evergreen perennials. Does well in full sun but requires light shade in the hottest of climates. Can survive to temperatures of 28°F/-2°C. Both species of horticultural interest in this genus are good as poolside plants. They do not have any litter and can withstand splashing. The Giant Bird of Paradise (S. nicolai) can reach 30 ft. tall. Ventilate plants when temperatures reach 68°F (20°C) or higher. Less hardy plants should be grown in a warm greenhouse, and moved outdoors during the summer. In warm regions, Strelitzia works well as a specimen plant.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Planting
Sow seeds at 64-70°F (18-21°C). Plants propagated from the seed may take 3 or more years to flower. Can also propagate by dividing rooted suckers in spring.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Pest
Scale insects. Strelitzia is also vulnerable to fungal and bacterial spots.
White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) - Soil and irrigation
Does best in rich, well-draining soil that is kept moist. Water liberally during the growing season, less in winter.
