Chinese Spinach (Amaranthus tricolor 'Illumination') - Description

Spectacular foliage. Bright rosy red upper leaves topped with gold. Lower leaves are chocolate and dark green. In color in early summer. Annual. Ht:3'. GARDEN HINTS: For earlier bloom and in cold areas, seeds may be started indoors about 8 weeks before outdoor planting time. Cultivate or mulch to control weeds. Prefers a dry or well- drained location.

Blooms dense cymes of red or green flowers followed by seed heads. Prolong flowering by watering freely during dry summer periods.

Erect, spreading, or prostrate annuals or short-lived perennials. Does best with full sun or partial shade. Can reach 3 ft. tall in some species. Can become invasive.
