Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Description
Amaryllis (pronounced /ˌæməˈrɪlɨs/) is a small genus of flowering bulbs, with two species. The better known of the two, Amaryllis belladonna, is a native of the Western Cape region of South Africa, particularly the rocky southwest area between the Olifants River Valley to Knysna. For many years there was confusion amongst botanists over the generic names Amaryllis and Hippeastrum, one result of which is that the common name "amaryllis" is mainly used for cultivars of the genus Hippeastrum, widely sold in the winter months for their ability to bloom indoors.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Blooming
Blooms showy flowers. Summer-flowering.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Growth
Grows best with full sun or partial shade. Where Amaryllis is not hardy, raise plants indoors in a cool greenhouse. Cool greenhouses have a minimum temperature of 35°F (2°C). During the day, set temperatures between 41-50°F (5-10°C), and at night, keep the temperature at 36°F (2°C).Where marginally hardy, Amaryllis is suitable against a sheltered wall.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Planting
When ripe, sow seeds in containers at 61°F (16°C) under glass. Also remove offsets when dormant and grow under glass for atleast 1-2 seasons before planting outdoors. Plant the bulbs just below the soil surface, after the foliage has died down in late spring.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Pest
Prone to damage by slugs and narcissus bulb flies. Aphids and spider mites often cause problems under glass. Other issues include leaf scorch, leaf spot, and Southern blight.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Interesting facts
There is only known species in the genus Amaryllis, native to coastal hills and streambanks in S. Western Cape, South Africa.
Amaryllis (Amaryllis belladonna) - Soil and irrigation
Does best in moderately fertile, well-draining soil. Soil-based potting mixes with added leaf mold and sharp sand work fine for indoor plants. Water moderately during the growing season. Best to keep dry when dormant.
