California Allspice (Calycanthus occidentalis) - Description

C. occidentalis is native along streams, moist slopes in California's Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It grows to heights of 4 to 12 feet high and wide. It bears bright green leaves that are 2 to 6 inches long, 1 to 2 inches wide, and turns yellow in the fall. It bears brownish red flowers 2 inches across, resembling small water lilies, which appear in mid- to late spring or summer.

Carolina Allspice is a deciduous shrub that has many ancestral traits that indicate that it has changed little from when it first speciated. These plants are known to have lush foliage and flowers valued for their fragrance and form. Interestingly enough, the seeds are toxic and ingesting them can cause convulsions. When crushed, the dark green leaves produce a camphor or clove-like aroma.
