Ylang Ylang Tree (Cananga odorata) - Description
Cananga odorata, commonly called ylang-ylang (/ˈiːlæŋˈiːlæŋ/ EE-lang-EE-lang), cananga tree, ilang-ilang, kenanga (Indonesian), fragrant cananga, Macassar-oil plant or perfume tree, is a tree valued for its perfume. The essential oil derived from the flowers is used in aromatherapy. Artabotrys odoratissimus, ylang-ylang vine, and Artabotryshexapetalus, climbing ylang-ylang, are woody, evergreen climbing plants in the same family. A. odoratissimus is also a source of perfume.

Fast growing, medium sized tree. Found in lowland, humid tropics with 700-5000 mm rainfall. Grows well in the Indo-Pacific area with equatorial to subtropical maritime climates. Withstands temperatures as low as 5ºC (41ºF). Does best with full sun, but tolerates shade. Ylang-ylang is often grown in homegardens as ornamentals in gardens throughout the Pacific islands. Grows well among other crops.

The strongly scented flowers of ylang-ylang are popularly used in Micronesia and Polynesia to make garlands, headdresses, etc.
