Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Description
Cedrus atlantica, the Atlas Cedar, is a cedar native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria (Tell Atlas, Saharan Atlas) and Morocco (in the Rif and Middle Atlas, and locally in the High Atlas). A majority of the modern sources treat it as a distinct species Cedrus atlantica, but some sources consider it a subspecies of Lebanon Cedar (C. libanisubsp. atlantica).
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Blooming
Needle-like foliage. Male cones, light brown in color, are produced in autumn. Female cones start out green, then ripen to a brown hue.
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Growth
Cedars excel with full sun. Some species (C. deodara) are fast growing to 80 ft. tall and 40 ft. spread. Cedars need plenty of space to grow to their full potential.
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Planting
Sow seeds in spring.
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Pest
Mealybugs, scale insects, caterpillars, pinewood nematode. Other problems include root rot, needle blights, stem cankers, and dieback.
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Interesting facts
Cedrus includes only 4 species of evergreen coniferous trees.
Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - Soil and irrigation
Does best with deep, well drained soils. They have deep roots which allows them to be tolerant of drought.
