Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) - Description

Cordyline australis, commonly known as the cabbage tree, is a widely branched monocot tree endemic to New Zealand. It grows up to 20 metres (66 ft) tall with a stout trunk and sword-like leaves, which are clustered at the tips of the branches and can be up to 1 metre (3 ft) long. With its tall, straight trunk and dense, rounded heads, C.

Long, usually creamy, sweetly scented flowers are borne in summer followed by spherical white, blue, red, or purple berries.

Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) - Growth

Woody plant with sword like leaves. C. australis is hardy to 15°F/-9.5°C, grows up to 20-30 feet. Other species can be grown indoors or outdoors. C. terminalis has many named forms and can grow to 6-8 feet tall in frost free areas. Does best in sun or partial shade. In frost-prone areas, grow Cordyline indoors as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse. A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64°F (13-18°C) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55°F (13°C). In warm areas, Cordyline works well in a courtyard garden or in a mixed or shrub border.

Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) - Planting

Long cuttings of C. stricta root quickly when stuck in the ground. For C. terminalis place small sections of stem in a mixture of peat moss and sand, covering about one half their diameters. Plant shoots that grow out and root. Sow from seed in spring at 61°F (16°C).

Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) - Pest

Scale insects, spider mites, and mealybugs. Other problems include root rot, bacterial and fungal spots, bacterial soft rot, and fluoride toxicity.

Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) - Soil and irrigation

Depends on species; C. australis grows fastest in soil deep enough for big, carrot like roots, and tolerates some drought. C stricta needs regular water and can be grown in a container either in or outdoors. C. terminalis needs ample water and warm soil, but indoors in takes ordinary house plant care.
