Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Description
Crocosmia paniculata (Aunt Eliza) is a bulbous flowering plant that is native to eastern South Africa, growing in wet areas by streams, marshes, and drainages. Plants reach 4 to 5 ft (1. 2-1. 5 m) tall, with lanceolate leaves and deep orange to orange-brown flowers. It is a popular ornamental plant. The plant has escaped cultivation and become established in the wild in parts of the United Kingdom. The common name, Aunt Liza, is derived from the former generic name Antholyza.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Blooming
Arching clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers in mid to late summer. The flowers are tubular to funnel shaped with six spreading lobes and carried in arching spikes or panicles.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Growth
Perennials. 2 to 3-foot tall clumps of ribbed, linear to sword shaped leaves. Some varieties are hardy, and may be grown outdoors all year. Corms may be packed in a cool (40F) dry place over winter for less hardy varieties, but they will not flower as well. May also be treated as annuals. Does best in sun or partial shade.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Planting
Plant corms in spring 3-4 inches deep, 4-5 inches apart in evenly moist soil that is rich in organic matter. Can also propagate by division in spring, before growth begins. Division entails propagating a plant by splitting it into 2 or more parts. Each part has its own root system and more than one shoot or dormant bud.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Pest
Spider mites cause problems.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Interesting facts
There are only 7 known species of Crocosmia.
Montbretia (Crocosmia paniculata) - Soil and irrigation
Does well in moderately fertile, well-draining soil. Make sure to mulch in winter.
