Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Description
Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights' is an English hybrid type with very strong stems that reach only 3 feet tall and never need staking. Huge panicles of frilly lavender-pink blossoms with a touch of bright blue and a white bee add a dramatic presence to thelandscape in early summer. Removing spent flower spikes may result in another round of blooms on secondary spikes in late summer and fall. However, its large, coarsely textured leaves make this plant attractive even when it's not in bloom.
Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Blooming
Many Delphiniums are blue, but they come in several colors including white, various shades of red, pink, lavender and purple.
Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Growth
Delphiniums are perennial plants although they are sometimes treated like an annual or biennial. Delphinium does best in full sun.
Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Planting
Delphiniums thrive in the cooler climates of the north country, though they will grow as far south as zone 7. Delphiniums can be grown in full sun or partial shade, though full sun may help to prevent powdery mildew. When planting, be sure to set the crown at or above soil level to avoid rot. Since their stems are hollow, taller varieties of Delphiniums should be staked to prevent damage from wind and rain.
Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Pest
Slugs, snails, and cyclamen mites. Other problems include Southern blight, powdery mildew, bacterial and fungal spots, crown and root rot, gray mold, white rot, rust, damping off, white smut, and leaf smut.
Hybrid Bee Delphinium (Delphinium elatum 'Morning Lights') - Soil and irrigation
Hybrid Bee Delphinium grows best in rich, well-drained soil with a basic pH. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions.
