Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Description
F. glauca is a native grass to Europe. This splendid ornamental grass forms dense clumps of beautiful, silvery blue spears of foliage that create impressive year round interest. It is excellent for edging or for the front of flower borders. The seed heads can be cut and used for uniquely colorful bouquets. Plant this in a rock garden or in small groups in a drought tolerant garden to get some real fun contrast and color.
Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Growth
Afternoon shade helps them cope with humid, hot summers. Otherwise full sun is best for leaf color.
Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Planting
Propagate by division. Plants self-sow and can be grown from seed, but cultivars should be propagated by division. For clumping varieties, plant 1' apart.
Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Pest
Festuca is susceptible to net blotch, ergot, powdery mildew, eye spot, summer blight, smut, brown patch, rust, and leaf spot.
Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Interesting facts
Festuca arundinacea was used during the 1930s for land reclamation during the dust bowl. Other species are highly valued for low-traffic lawns or bowling greens.
Blue Fescue (Festuca glauca) - Soil and irrigation
Moist, well-drained soil. Good drainage is essential in places with wet summers.
