Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) - Description
J. nigra is native to eastern North America. It produces leaves that have 11 to 23 leaflets, each 2.5 to 5 inches long. It bears rounch, 1.5 inch diameter nuts, that are rich in flavor.

Walnut trees. Some have edible nuts. Some exude a toxic chemical from roots that inhibits the growth of some plants, extending 50-80 feet from trunk. Grass grows near them, though. The black walnut tree (J. nigra) grows to 75 feet tall. Leaves are divided into 5 inch long leaflets. The edible nuts are encased in 2 inch green husks.

The wood is highly valued for furniture making. Although all species have edible kernels, only Juglans regia's nuts have a large enough flesh and thin enough shell to be produced commercially.
