Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) - Description
Sent from Tibet by a Burpee customer in 1938, this tall lettuce produces both Romaine-like leaves and a delicious, succulent 15" stem. Peel the stems and use slices of the tender pale green centers stir-fried or raw.

Unless you are allowing the lettuce plants to set seed for seed harvesting, you should not allow the plants to flower. Blooms dense clusters of small yellow flowers.

Widely variable, leafy, cool-season annuals. Grows best in full sun. The leaves are edible and can mature into a range of colors and forms.

Sow when threat of frost has passed. Sow seeds directly into the ground in early spring. Cover seeds with a light layer of soil. Provide at least 4" of space between seedlings.

Lettuces are in the same plant family as the sunflower and dandelion. Although they may not look similar from their foliar characteristics, their flowers look very similar. There are around 100 species of Lactuca.
