Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum) - Description

A beautiful plant who's well meaning name could sound a bit macabre. 'Bloody Cranesbill', although a bit gruesome, is aptly named due to its foliage turning an attractive red in the late fall and early winter months. A wonderful look when in full bloom for the spring and summer months, with it's pink or white blooms blanketing your landscape. This is a great ground cover to use due to its ability to spread by rhizomes to blanket a space. Great for under trees or tucked in around landscape boulders or in a rock garden (in a shadier location).

Most Cranesbill start blooming in May and will continue through the autumn. If the summer heat causes the flowers to fad, trim back and water heavily to promote continued blooming.

They prefer full sun or half sun, but are tolerant of many conditions. They are cold hardy and will last through autumn. The roots can become invasive.
