Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Description

Larkspur is native throughout the Northern Hemisphere and also on the high mountains of tropical Africa. The plants flower from late spring to late summer, and are pollinated by butterflies and bumble bees.

Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Blooming

Many Delphiniums are blue, but they come in several colors including white, various shades of red, pink, lavender and purple.

Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Growth

Delphiniums are perennial plants although they are sometimes treated like an annual or biennial. Delphinium does best in full sun.

Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Planting

In areas that have mild winters, sow Delphinium seeds in flats or pots in the summer. Transplanted plants should be planted in early fall for spring and summer flowering.

Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Pest

Slugs, snails, and cyclamen mites. Other problems include Southern blight, powdery mildew, bacterial and fungal spots, crown and root rot, gray mold, white rot, rust, damping off, white smut, and leaf smut.

Larkspur (Delphinium hybrids) - Soil and irrigation

Plants need rich soil. Poor soil should be amended with soil conditioners, such as lime for strongly acidic soils. It is important not to cover the root crowns with soil.
