English Walnut (Juglans regia) - Description
Juglans regia, the Persian walnut, English walnut, especially in Great Britain, common walnut, or especially in the US, California walnut, is an Old World walnut tree species native to the region stretching from the Balkans eastward to the Himalayas and southwest China. The largest forests are in Kyrgyzstan, where trees occur in extensive, nearly pure walnut forests at 1,000–2,000 m altitude (Hemery 1998)—notably at Arslanbob in Jalal-Abad Province.
English Walnut (Juglans regia) - Growth
Walnut trees. Some have edible nuts. Some exude a toxic chemical from roots that inhibits the growth of some plants, extending 50-80 feet from trunk. Grass grows near them, though. The black walnut tree (J. nigra) grows to 75 feet tall. Leaves are divided into 5 inch long leaflets. The edible nuts are encased in 2 inch green husks.
English Walnut (Juglans regia) - Planting
Plant seeds as soon as they ripen.
English Walnut (Juglans regia) - Interesting facts
The wood is highly valued for furniture making. Although all species have edible kernels, only Juglans regia's nuts have a large enough flesh and thin enough shell to be produced commercially.
English Walnut (Juglans regia) - Soil and irrigation
Deep, rich, most soil. Somewhat tolerates drier sites.
