Pandanus tectorius is a species of Pandanus (screwpine) that is native to Malesia, eastern Australia, and the Pacific Islands. Common names include Thatch Screwpine, Hala (Hawaiian), Fala (Samoan), Bacua (Spanish), Vacquois (French), and Mudu keyiya (Sinhala).

Thatch Screw Pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) - Blooming

Male and female petalless flowers are borne on separate plants. Females produce fruits that resemble pineapples.

Thatch Screw Pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) - Growth

Grows best with full sun exposure with moderate to high humidity. Raise plants indoors, as houseplants or in a warm greenhouse, in places where temperatures drop below 55°F (13°C). A warm greenhouse has a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C). During the day, temperatures should be set to 55-64°F (13-18°C) or above, and at night, the temperature should be at 55°F (13°C). Pandanus makes a great speciment tree in warmer regions.

Thatch Screw Pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) - Planting

When ripe, or in spring, sow seeds at 64°F (18°C). Make sure to soak the seeds first for 24 hours. Also in spring, remove suckers or offsets.

Thatch Screw Pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) - Pest

Mealybugs and scale insects can cause problems, as well as leaf spots, basal stem rot, anthracnose, and leaf whorl rot.

Thatch Screw Pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) - Soil and irrigation

Grows well with soil that is fertile, moist, yet well-draining. Soil-based potting mixes with added leaf mold and charcoal work for indoor plants. Water moderately from spring to summer, less in winter.
