Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Description
The dense green foliage of this evergreen will enhance your landscape with a carpet of moss-like groundcover that produces enchanting, tiny white flowers from late spring to mid-summer. Sagina subulata will grow best in full sun with some midday shade and creates an attractive display around flagstone walkways and along rock walls. Irish Moss can also be planted in containers to safely control moisture and light levels.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Blooming
True mosses are not flowering plants; however, Irish Moss does flower. The flowers are small and white.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Growth
Unlike true mosses, Irish Mosses will not grow well under similar climatic conditions that help true mosses thrive. Irish Mosses, however, do appear to be like true mosses in their growth habits. They grow prostrate along the ground and do well as a "walk able" plant in between a stone footpath.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Planting
To plant, cut squares from flats and set around 6 inches apart from each other in spring. Sow seeds in pots indoors in autumn.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Pest
Susceptible to snails, slugs and cutworms.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Interesting facts
These plants are sometimes called Pearlworts or Irish Moss. The name Irish Moss is misleading as the plant is not native to Ireland and it is not a moss. The name Pearlwort is derived from the shape of the flower buds that resemble small pearls.
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) - Soil and irrigation
Does best with well-drained soil that is acidic to neutral.
