Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) - Description
Cat thyme (Teucriummarum) is a close relative of germander; despite what its name suggests, it is not a thyme. Its small, oval leaves give it a thyme-like appearance, but the musty scent is quite unlike the delicate aroma of thyme, cat thyme is a mounding, tender perennial with grey-green leaves tipped by fragrant pink flowers in summer.
Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) - Blooming
Flowers come in whorls of small flowers. Some species (T. cossonii majoricum) continuously flower with honey-scented flowers in dense heads. Other species will flower in the summer.
Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) - Growth
Herbaceous perennials, evergreen and deciduous shrubs and subshrubs. Germanders do best with full sun. Like other members of the Mint family, they have strongly aromatic foliage. Bush Germander can reach as tall as 8 ft., while other species grow prostrate along the ground.Small species, growing 12" tall, work well in a rock garden. T. fruticans is fit for topiary.
Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) - Planting
Sow seeds when ripe in containers in a cold frame. Can also propagate from softwood cuttings and semi-ripe cuttings in summer. Overwinter young tender species in a cool greenhouse. Propagate from softwood cuttings in late winter or early spring.
Cat Thyme (Teucrium marum) - Pest
