Nasturtium (Tropaeolum x 'Gleam Mix') - Description
Large, fragrant, double and semi-double flowers in a wide range of colors bloom from midsummer until frost. Good for beds, training on trellis or fence. All- America Winner. Annual. Trailing type. Ht. 3ft. GARDEN HINTS: Prefers poor dry soil, as rich, moist soils produce all foliage and few blooms. Does not transplant well, If raised indoors, sow seed in pots, temperature 65 deg. F, and transplant carefully.

The word "Nasturtium" is a derived Latin term for "twisted-nose", which is a reference to this plant's pungent taste. The young leaves, flowers and unripe fruit are all edible and have taste like a combination of pepper and radish. Nasturtiums are excellent "companion" plants, meaning that they can be planted alongside other crops to ward off insect pests. (This doesn't mean that they are impervious to all insect pests).
